The long-anticipated race between NFL star Tyreek Hill and Olympic sprinter Noah Lyles has been canceled.

On Monday (June 16), Lyles, the reigning Olympic 100-meter champion, announced that his race with Hill was canceled due to “personal reasons” and “complications," per the New York Post.

“We were very deep into creating the event,” Lyles said at the Sport Beach event in Cannes, France. “In fact, it was supposed to happen this weekend."

“Unfortunately there were some things, complications, personal reasons that it just didn’t come to pass, but we were full on," he continued.

The race was set to take place in New York City's Times Square, which would've been "shut down," Lyles added. "It was going to be a lot of fun."

On Tuesday (June 17), Hill appeared to suggest that Lyles backed out of the race for other reasons.

"@Nojo18 after seeing me race last weekend," Hill, 31, wrote in his Instagram Stories alongside the infamous Simpsons meme of Homer backing into the bushes.

The race's cancellation comes after Lyles sported a "Tyreek could never" sign after winning the 60-meter final at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix earlier this year.

"Everybody says that they're gonna be the world's fastest, but when it comes down to it, you gotta be the winner every time, each and every time, and every time I show up to the biggest moments, I win," Lyles told PEOPLE in February ahead of the scheduled race.

On Tuesday, Hill also took aim at Lyle's sign, writing “Noah could never.”
