Jamaican soccer star Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw delivered the Black Power salute during her starting lineup return for Manchester City Women after facing racist abuse online.
On Sunday (February 16), Shaw bowed her head and raised her first during her first start for City since pulling out of the team due to online abuse, per the Associated Press. City went on to win Sunday's match 4-0 over Liverpool in the Women's Super League.
“It’s powerful, obviously,” City manager Gareth Taylor said in a statement. “Bunny’s a proud Black woman and where she’s come from means a lot to her.”
Shaw faced online abuse after a match against Arsenal on February 2. The Jamaican striker pulled out of the League Cup semifinal match four days later and returned only as a substitute for an FA Cup match on February 9.
The soccer star said it was “definitely good to get back on the scoresheet after a difficult couple of days" after making her return to the starting lineup on Sunday.
Taylor noted that Shaw's teammates supported her during the game.
“It’s nice for her to be able to feel the love from the supporters and the club,” he said.
The Black Power salute was famously delivered in protest of racial injustice by American medalists John Carlos and Tommie Smith on the victory stand at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968.
