A shooting in Philadelphia has left a 17-year-old basketball star dead.
On Tuesday (January 14), Noah Scurry, a 17-year-old senior at Samuel Fels High School, was shot just outside of his home while he was heading to school, per CBS News Philadelphia.
Scurry suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
According to a letter sent to the Samuel Fels school community, Scurry was the lead scorer on the basketball team, averaging 15 points per game this season, and had earned the school's highest score on the SAT college placement test.
"It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the passing of one of our students whose life was tragically taken this morning near his home," Principal Melissa Rasper wrote in the letter. "Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to the family and friends of this student."
Rasper noted that all basketball practices and games would be canceled for the rest of the week.
A motive for the shooting remains unclear. The Philadelphia Police Department said it's still investigating the incident.
"No arrests have been made," the PPD said in a statement, "and no weapon was recovered."
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to raise money for Scurry's funeral expenses.
