Social media is buzzing after the first trailer dropped for the 2023 movie adaption of The Color Purple.

On Monday (May 22), The Color Purple trailer was released, prominently featuring Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, and Colman Domingo, per HuffPost.

The film, which is based on Alice Walker's 1982 novel, depicts the life of sisters Celie and Nettie as they grow up in Georgia in the early 1900s. After the sisters are separated as teens, Celie begins to document her life struggles in a series of letters to God.

Barrino will reprise her role from a 2007 stage version of the musical as she portrays adult Celie. Ciara will star as an older version of Nettie, while Bailey portrays the younger version of the character.

The 2023 adaptation comes after The Color Purple first hit the big screen in 1985, with Whoopi Goldberg starring as Celie.

Barrino revealed last month that she almost turned down the big-screen role of Celie due to its gravitas. However, the American Idol alum said her co-stars and director Blitz Bazawule helped her come into the role.

“I had to pull up some things that I had buried, but I felt safe doing it because my director and cast surrounded me and I was able to go back into that place,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I am Celie.”

Oprah Winfrey, a producer of the 2023 film, called the latest iteration a “revival for joy, a revival for hope.”
